Racing season 1931
In Venice on 12 November 1931, Prince Carlo Maria Ruspoli achieved the speed record for 6-litre class boats by piloting the Niniette (nickname of Lidia, Bugatti's second daughter); a complex built by the Celli shipyard and equipped with a Bugatti 8-cylinder 4972 cc engine, type 50, with a compressor capable of exceeding 200 horsepower at 4000 rpm. Ruspoli managed to reach an average speed of 101.912 km/h. His hull, 6.50 metres long and 1.90 metres wide, with a front rudder and direct transmission, aroused some criticism and skepticism, for being equipped with a Redan hull.
On 15 November 1931, in Gardone Riviera, it was the turn of the Italian Antonio Becchi who raised the national speed record for 12-litre racers. At the helm of the Lia III , from the Baglietto shipyard powered by an Isotta Fraschini, Becchi clocked 109.898 km/h. In the same year, the American Gar Wood returned with his Miss America IX , which succeeded in the attempt to become the fastest man on the water with hulls with immersed propellers. His personal record was 167.1 km/h.
